On Saturday, March 18, 2023, at approximately 22:00 hours, a massive fire broke out at 44 George Street inside of a multi-family home. The Medford Fire Department arrived at the scene and transmitted multiple alarms as the fire continued to grow. As of now, two families are left without a home.

The fire is alleged to have started on the rear porches of the multi-family duplex home on George Street before quickly spreading and engulfing almost the entire house. Firefighters had initially thought they knocked down the fire, but it had extended inside the walls and spread from there.

Medford Jakes were then unable to quickly access and put out the fire resulting in them having to strike a 4th alarm for additional manpower. The fire had to then be tackled from multiple different locations within the home, but soon the fire fully engulfed the home on all different sides. Ladders were used to get access to the roof as firefighters went on the offensive.

Thanks to the hard-working Medford Fire Department and their mutual aid partners from Malden, Somerville, Everett, Chealse, Revere, Arlington, and more, the fire was eventually knocked down and prevented from spreading to any other homes in the area. The house was then heavily monitored for any hotspots late into the night by firefighters who stayed behind at the scene.

Luckily, all residents of the home got out of the house safely, and no firefighters were hurt. Two families, 6 people total, are now without housing. The extent of damages is still unknown as well as the reason why and how the fire broke out. The scene is currently being actively investigated. At this time, there is no further information.
