CHELSEA – In the late evening of Sunday, October 8, 2023, a multi-agency response between the Chelsea Police Department, Massachusetts State Police Troop H, Chelsea Fire Department, and Cataldo Ambulance service occurred after shots were fired and a man was reported to be shot in the area.

The incident unfolded around 10:30pm when a ShotSpotter activation and several 911 calls came in reporting that shots were fired in the area of Congress Avenue and Shurtleff Street. Chelsea Police quickly responded to discover a man that had sustained multiple gunshot wounds.

According to Chelsea Fire Department radio traffic, the man was unresponsive and was in critical condition as CPR was started. While CPR was being administered to the man by the Fire Department, Cataldo EMS arrived and began providing care for the patient. He was transported to Massachusetts General Hospital in Boston.

Unfortunately, the man passed away from his injuries after being transported. Massachusetts State Police later identified the victim as 23 year old Santos David Canizales, of Chelsea. The Chelsea Police Department, in conjunction with the Suffolk County District Attorney, are actively investigating the shooting. The Massachusetts State Police were requested to the scene to process the evidence. The Chelsea Police have requested that anyone with information about the shooting should call them at 617-466-4800.
